According to a recent study by Florida State University, the distraction caused by a notification on your personal device – an inbound phone call or text, an alarm bell or even a vibration – is comparable to the effects caused when you make a call or send a text message. Anyone who had a science class is familiar with the “Pavlovian response” to change your focus from the task at hand to something less important.
Researchers report, “Cellular phone notifications alone significantly disrupt performance on an attention-demanding task, even when participants do not directly interact with a mobile device during the task.” Even waiting to see who called or to read a text can distract attention from the task at hand, according to researchers.
The simple solution, of course, is to power down mobile devices before pulling away from the curb. While few of us are likely to do so, though, it is a good start to at least be aware of the risks and seek to mitigate the effects.
