It’s 12:00. Do you know where your mobile device is?

According to Morgan Stanley, mobile device sales will exceed personal computer sales this year. Unfortunately, company policies regarding mobile device security have lagged dangerously behind.  Industry experts and cyber security thought leaders all agree; the next wave of hacking and data theft will not target laptops.  It will target mobile communication devices.  Following is a list of recommendations to help protect your firm from mobile device security breaches:

Secure All Mobile Devices – A report issued by McAfee and Carnegie Mellon states four out of ten organizations have experienced mobile device loss or theft. The first line of defense is to alert employees of the need for vigilance regarding their mobile devices. Begin by communicating simple instructions such as: don’t leave your mobile device unattended; don’t place your mobile device in plain view on a table; and store your mobile device in a secure place.

Establish a Clear Policy – Draft and publish a mobile device security policy for all staff members, updating periodically  as technology advances.

Require employees to use strong passwords unique to their mobile devices. Passwords should be changed frequently. Discourage employees from visiting non-work sites with their work devices, as well as adding non-work related apps. Downloading apps can introduce malware. Back up devices regularly. As much as possible, do not store sensitive information on mobile devices.

Provide employees with an easy-to-follow protocol in the event of a lost or stolen device. Wipe data clean from any lost or stolen device immediately.

Of course, your ability to do so will require the installation of a mobile device security package that are readily available today.

Cyber security Insurance – A security breach can compromise personal information resulting in legal exposure and financial liability. Because even the most fastidious mobile device security plan cannot fully protect your firm from a security breach, eliminate the financial implications of a loss by choosing to have a cyber-security insurance policy before one minute from normal strikes.
