Time Is Running Out for FEMA Assistance

Homeowners and businesses affected by Hurricane Sandy have only a little more than a month to apply for FEMA assistance. Following are filing and eligibility guidelines:

FEMA assistance available to businesses generally comes in the form of a loan from the Small Business Association. Depending upon your situation and the nature of your business, these loans can be Disaster Assistance, Economic Injury or Farm Emergency loans.  To learn about options available to your business click on this helpful <link> .

Disaster assistance for homeowners whose property was damaged or destroyed as a result of Hurricane Sandy is financial or direct assistance. It is meant to assist individuals whose losses are not covered by insurance, by helping to pay critical expenses that cannot be covered in other ways. While FEMA assistance is not intended to restore damaged property to its pre-disaster condition, it can help to ease a significant portion of the financial burden.

To be eligible for FEMA assistance, losses must have occurred in an area covered by a disaster declaration. In addition, you must file a claim with your Homeowners, Property or Package policy insurance carrier, whether you expect your claim to be covered or not covered by your insurance.  However, you do not have to wait for your claim to be denied before registering with FEMA.
