Super Storm Sandy Aftermath

KMRD Are You Ready for One Minute From Normal?

Super Storm Sandy Aftermath

At our website www.oneminutefromnormal.com we ask visitors the question: What if an unscheduled event suddenly seizes control of your business? Are you ready?

It has been said, primarily by politicians, you should never waste a good crisis. With financial losses from Hurricane Sandy expected to be triple those caused by Hurricane Irene, this crisis will have a long reach and longer conclusion. During the next few weeks we will seek lessons learned from Hurricane Sandy and its aftermath.  We’ll start at the end with claims.

  • Notify your insurance agent immediately regarding damages to your business following an unplanned event.  Your agent should provide expert guidance which can prove critical to the recovery of your business.
  • Manage your emotions when making decisions.  Business mistakes are made when decision makers lead with their heart and not their head in a disaster.  With suffering all around, take stock, be positive and focus on facts, not emotion.
  • While making the safety of yourself and staff the foremost priority, set aside all of the damaged physical assets.  Photograph all damaged assets before moving them to another location.  Document, document, document!
  • Make notes regarding damages. With so much going on following an event like a hurricane, important details can be forgotten.  Document, document, document!
  • Projected lost revenue can damage your business just as much as a flooded shop floor or collapsed roof. By keeping your business plan current before an event, you will be better able to project the financial impact following an event.  Speak with your agent regarding business interruption coverage.
  • Keep a record of disaster-related expenses which are easily distinguished from other costs.  These should include contractors’ labor, company labor, materials, machinery and freight. This record will facilitate your ability to file a claim.  Document, document, document!

Our #1 priority is to help KMRD clients who were affected by Hurricane Sandy to get back to normal.
