Disaster Recovery – Your help is needed
Disaster Recovery – Your help is needed
At our website www.oneminutefromnormal.com we ask visitors the question: What if an unscheduled event suddenly seizes control of your business? Are you ready?
With flowers blooming, birds chirping and hamburgers sizzling on the grill, what is there not to like about June? If you work for FEMA or the American Red Cross, or live in the southeast corner of the United States, the answer might be that June is the beginning of the six-month Atlantic hurricane season. This year, this news may be especially worrisome.
While government forecasters predict above average storm activity, aid groups are woefully short of funding.
During the two-month period that began March 31, the Red Cross has already launched 29 relief operations in 22 states. More than 9,200 Red Cross disaster recovery specialists have served more than 2.1 million meals and snacks, while opening more than 200 shelters.
Of course, other aid groups have joined the fight. While the Salvation Army raised $7.7 million to assist southern communities hit by tornadoes in April, this compares with the $382 million it raised to help cope with the effects of Hurricane Katrina.
This funding problem has been heightened by the disaster in Japan. Dollars that may have been donated locally have instead been spent on international relief efforts.
When a business or a community encounters circumstances that bring it one minute from normal, the means to get back to normal are essential. Otherwise, there will be no return. No Disaster Recovery. Each one of us can support U.S. aid groups with both our dollars and our efforts.
