According to Pennsylvania State Statute 75 §3805(a), all autos owned by DUI offenders may for a first offense and must for a second offense be equipped with ignition interlock devices for at least 1 year following license reinstatement. In New Jersey, a first time offender with a BAC greater than 0.15 must install an ignition interlock device. Installation is mandatory for 6 months after the required period of license suspension has been served.
Current ignition interlock technology prevents a vehicle from being started if a driver’s breath registers a certain amount of alcohol. Future technology could use biometric readings via fingerprint or infrared breath analysis.
Support to expand the use of interlock technology is compelling. Installing technology that prevents drunk drivers from starting a vehicle into every vehicle in the U.S. could save 59,000 lives and $343 million over 15 years, according to a University of Michigan study. Cost savings from the technology’s widespread use could outweigh the expense of the devices after three years.
