Risks Ahead…Be careful of grill fires

In excess of 5,500 grill fires occur on residential property each year, according to the U.S. Fire Administration. These fires can spoil an otherwise lovely afternoon by causing an average $37 million in damages, 100 injuries and 10 deaths. In addition, thousands of people visit emergency rooms each year from burns suffered while barbecuing.

Malfunctioning gas grills cause the majority of these fires.

Your homeowner’s policy will cover the following financial damages in the event of a grill fire. (Fire is a covered peril.)

  • Damage to your house
  • Damage to personal possessions, such as patio furniture
  • Damage to insured structures on your property, such as a storage shed or gazebo
  • Injuries to your guest(s), under the liability portion of the policy

Of course you will be required to first pay your deductible. If damage is minimal and your deductible is high, it may not make sense to file an insurance claim. Consult with your trusted insurance agent, who can provide professional guidance.
